2009 North West Championships, TYC, 14/15 Feb and 21/22 Feb PDF

WRITTEN BY ROB WATSON
Transvaal Yacht Club at Hartbeespoort Dam hosted the first of two weekends to decide the 2009 North West Championships on the 14/15 February. Sponsored by Mitsubishi Randburg and RSA, the Security Division of EMC, the event attracted 18 entries, the vast majority of which were J22’s.
Aware that many of the competitors were married, attached or otherwise linked to members of the opposite sex, Sailing Secretary Steve Thysse conducted the skippers briefing sharply at one o’clock on the internationally recognized day of love. It was also the start of something called the Super 14, but being a Pom and therefore knowing nothing about rugby (obviously), I’m not entirely sure what that is, so let’s just assume it was out of consideration to the sailors’ respective partners.

2009 J22 news update PDF

Well with the third month of 2009 about to start we are all no doubt settled into the work routine and hopefully you are now able to slot in some R and R time sailing.

The first big event had to be Round the Island. With 381 yachts competing, 7 of which were J22’s. Far to many J sailors on ‘other’ yachts but I have no doubt they made their presence known. Where were the other local J’s you may well ask! This is the first year that the wining J was presented with a Class trophy for the regatta. Well done Paul on Alpha Romeo.

2008 Adaptive Mobile North West Provisional Championships PDF
Transvaal Yacht Club, 9/10 & 16/17 February.
Over two consecutive weekends in February, Transvaal Yacht Club hosted the annual North West Provisional Championships. The event was notable for the support provided by Adaptive Mobile as the overall sponsor and the performance of local band Mackenzie Blue on the second Saturday. There was also enthusiastic support for the Cansa Shavathon, leading to some startling and rather inappropriate hairstyles for the final day of the event.
The regatta represented the first for new TYC Sailing Secretary, Steve Thysse. He ensured a strong turnout of 19 boats, though it was disappointing that no entrants from other clubs attended despite verbal support for the event. In total there were 12 J22’s present, including a new boat in the form of Moonshadow, skippered by Werner Hautmann and the recently acquired, and returning, Jaywalker, skippered by the Sailing Secretary himself. Another unexpected, though thoroughly welcome entrant was Ewald Sternagel on Hakahana. Rumours of his retirement from racing were clearly wide of the mark and, as the event progressed, it was blatantly apparent that his skills were still very much intact despite the layoff.
