Tuning Guide: Lose that tension gauge! PDF

Article by Greg Fisher

" We're having great success with your "tension gauge-less" tuning method. I think it really helped us. Besides consistently nailing the proper rig tension, it has the added benefit of forcing us to sail upwind before every race which gives us a better handle on the numbers and lets Jimmy get a feel for the conditions. We're definitely working harder BETWEEN races and it's paying off!"

Kett Cummins, New Orleans

How hard is it blowing? How much above base are you tuned? Are you tuned for the lulls or the puffs? How much weight are you sailing with? Which gauge are you using? Where on the shroud are you checking your tension?

International J/22 Class Rule Excerpt:

2.9 Measurement
"A yacht shall only be measured by a measurer recognized by his National Sailing Authority and the International J/22 Class Association. A yacht shall not be recognized as a J/22 until its official measurement certificate is registered with the IJ22CA"

To obtain a measurement certificate:

New Boat - It comes with the Measurement Certificate partially completed by Builder.

Used Boat - Change of ownership invalidates the Measurement Certificate and the new owner should in his/her interest advise his/her Class Office. A measurer in your district will contact you. If the previous owner has a valid Measurement Certificate, and you have not made ANY alteration to your J/22, submit to the measurer the information required in Part A of the Measurement Certificate together with the previous owner's Certificate. Otherwise, make arrangement with your Measurer to have your J/22 re-measured.

Introduction to the J/22 PDF

People say the J/22 is the best sailing boat they've ever been on, including other J's. It's responsive, stable with its fixed lead keel and safe, as much fun to single-hand with main only as it is to plane under spinnaker in 18 knots of wind.

J/22 at 820 kg's. can easily be towed and be launched on the local yacht club ramp or crane. With its easy-to-rig, deck-stepped mast, you can be from trailer to sailing in 30 minutes. The key to J/22's success as a training boat is durability. It's no wonder Sail Newport, the USCG Academy and College of Charleston love this boat. Hulls and decks are built with Baltek cored laminates to withstand years of hard use. 12-15 year old boats routinely win major J/22 championships. You'll find the newest J/22s are even easier to maintain with stainless handrails and white composite toe-rails.

Since its introduction in 1983, the J/22 has blossomed into an International class now with 1550+ boats sailing in 65 fleets in 18 countries. Over 110 boats are signed on for the 2004 World Championship . On the merits of its sailing characteristics, widespread popularity and small crew number (3-4), J/22 continues to be the boat of choice and is selected again for the 2005 Rolex International Women's Keelboat Championship in Annapolis, MD.

The boat that appeals to all ages and skill levels is now garnering more interest than ever before. With new boats available in Cape Town, you can have world class speed right out of the box.
